There is a common assumption that licensed and insured moving companies automatically means your entire move and the full cash value of your belongings are covered.  However, this assumption is not correct.

The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires moving companies to provide a basic level of protection for household goods during transportation, called the 60 cents per pound released value protection. This type of coverage does not cost extra, but provides minimal protection for the shipment, which is calculated at 60 cents per pound per item in case of loss or damage. This means that if an item weighing 10 pounds is damaged or lost, the consumer will receive no more than $6.00 in compensation.

On the other hand, full coverage moving insurance is a more comprehensive protection option that provides a higher level of coverage and financial protection for the shipment. This insurance usually involves a higher cost and may require a more detailed inventory of the transported items, but it provides more extensive protection in case of loss or damage.

In summary, the 60 cents per pound released value protection is a mandatory, minimal protection offered by moving companies, while full coverage moving insurance is an optional, comprehensive protection option available to consumers for an additional cost.
