Statistics show that moving is often considered one of life’s most stressful experiences.  However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Relocating is never easy; it takes time, effort, and money. But with proper planning, you can avoid common mistakes and reduce the stresses of relocation.

Mistake 1: Not Having a Moving Plan

To have a smooth relocation experience, you must plan and organize everything.  Prioritize what needs to be done, get all the packing supplies, hire a professional moving company, etc. One of the most significant stressors people experience with moving stems from the lack of a clear strategy.

Once you’ve decided to relocate, start with a customized checklist with the most important and time-consuming tasks prioritized first.  Stick to this checklist and break down larger tasks into smaller ones.  Give yourself timeline checkpoints to ensure you’re staying on track.

Mistake 2: Waiting Until The Last Minute

Nobody really enjoys the process of packing.  It’s time-consuming, but it’s one you can’t ignore or procrastinate. It’s important to either give yourself enough time to pack or hire a professional moving company to help you pack.

We recommend using a color-coded system for packing.  For example, kitchen boxes are sealed with red tape or use a red marker, while the master bedroom might use blue.  This will help you stay organized both while packing and unpacking in your new home.

Mistake 3: Hoarding Items You Should Really Get Rid Of

Moving is a great time to get rid of old items you no longer want or need.  Whether you decide to sell them in a yard sale or on Facebook Marketplace, donate them to charity, or trash the items that don’t have any life left in them, getting rid of the things you don’t want or need will help streamline your move.

The less ‘stuff’ you have to move, the more streamlined and stress-free the process will be. Decluttering your home is always better than taking a bunch of stuff with you that will just stay in boxes in the new garage or attic.  Plus, you’ll actually save money on packing materials, the size of your moving truck, and the amount of time you need movers if you downsize beforehand.

Mistake 4: Not Properly Budgeting Your Move

Calculating all the move costs can be challenging, but you can get a general idea of the costs so you can properly budget.

Take the time to determine how much your move will cost by getting quotes from movers, truck rental companies, boxes, and supplies, etc.  There are even a lot of online moving calculators available to help you consider all the costs you may not naturally think about when it comes to moving.

Mistake 5: Not Properly Insuring Your Move

Unfortunately, anytime you’re relocating, whether on your own or with a moving company, you run a risk of damages.  It’s important to understand exactly what type of insurance is available to you and properly insures your move.  At Elite Moving Service Co., all of our moves come with a standard $0.60 per pound of insurance.  However, if an item weighs 100lbs, that’s $60 of coverage.  That may or may not be enough insurance. For this reason, we’ve partnered with movinginsurance.com to offer additional coverage. Enter Promo Code ELT25 to save $25 off your policy at movinginsurance.com
